Well here I am, 9 months and $8,000 since my course started and what do I have to show for it? A 2 1/2 min video which really the whole rest of my life is going to run off of. At least, for the next while. I think it's good enough to get me into an entry level position at a CG house and I just work my way up from there.
My thoughts? I'm quite happy with what I put out. This video is compressed to hell so it isn't going to look the greatest, but still should get across what I got done. It's a modeling/texturing/lighting reel so it's really just models spinning around. I kept the presentation pretty basic in order to keep the focus on the models themselves.
I also got this beautiful concept painting from a friend in class, who let me develop it into a model. It was a lot of fun to work on that painting, so I included it in my reel (with a fade to my model) hoping it helps out my friend as well.
So hope you like the reel. All my contact info is on there (as well as on this site) if you want to get in touch and see the hi-res full version. Feel f
ree to pass this along to as many people as you want.
very impressive. One suggestion is to animate your models (like Samus), it doesn't have to be anything complicated, but normal idle breathing and eye blinking will help you sell your demo reel. Good luck and hopefully I'll get to work with you in the future
One day.....I myles....shall hope to become as good as you... that was AWSOME! the metroid prime piece was amazing...and the opening squecne was great with the dragon and the horse...bump maping on the scales or were those actual extruded surfaces? regardless that was awsome...adn teh space ship in the end was i dont know i cant think of a word to describe it! Thank you for humbling me even more
I love your work. I'm actually attending school right now for 3D Modeling/Animating. Your demo reel is great. Although, if i could make one suggestion. More custom content. The environment and the Spaceship were amazing. And don't get me wrong, samus is awesome, but i think your demo reel would take you a lot further if you have more custom content... and maybe even a couple of low res game models as well (If you're interested in that kind of work that is)
Hey, thanks for the comments. Glad you took the time to check my reel out.
Actually, generally "custome content", though a good indication of an artists creative abilities, isn't always better than doing work based off of someone elses designs. In the industry, generally the guys who are doing the modelling and texturing of characters and objects, aren't the ones designing them. They get handed concept art and model scetches of approved designs that they must work from and try to stay as close to "on model" as possible.
So not only is %100 custom content in your demo reel not required, but showing that you can actually work from other peoples designs to create a final 3D product is quite valuable on a demo reel because it's a required skill in the industry.
It should be said though, that the reel that I've got hosted here has actually been replaced, now by 2 other versions (well, I'm just finishing work on the 2nd one now), which has much more original work in there. The one I'm doing now only has 2 pieces from the reel you saw that have been kept for this new reel.
And, I actually work as an artist for a game company, so a few low res-models might not be such a bad idea.
that's awesome...i would be interested in seeing your other demo reels. i am always in need of inspiration. And I'm glad you didn't take anything i said offensively. I didn't know you were already in the industry. Also, Thanks for the advice about not necessarily using custom content, it'll be very helpful when it comes to setting up my demo reel. I am very interested in getting into the game industy.
WOW!!!!! THAT IS SUPER AMAZING WORK THERE TAYLOR!! OMG!! Sorry it took me so long to view it! MAN that rocks!!! My fav. is definatly the horse-dragon sculpture!! I showed it to my mother and she thought it was real!
The fly-through of the interiour was AWESOME as well! I like how you showed the painting, then faded to the 'real interiour' It was also cool to see all the lights 'turn on'! Wow... I don't know much about modeling right yet, but I know that this stuff to me looked GREAT!!!
Nice how you showed different types of things you could model as well. You went from the sculpture of the horse and dragon, to the interiour with dark, moody lighting, then showed off a more colorful, video-game looking robotic design (any inspiration from your love Samson there? ) And the other female character you have been posting your progress on had a darked color scheme in comparison to the robotic one. NICE VARIETY!!!
I wish you the best of luck in your next quest: finding a job! You are super (or as you guys say it up there, 'uber') talented, and have a knack for solving the puzzles of life! Let me know how things go, and may the force be with you!
