"Now, you shall bear witness to the demon weapon that will drag the world in the 21st century!!" - Liquid Snake

Yep...she's finally done. I started here around mid july and now I'm closing the books on Rex. Though she's actually been done for about 3 weeks now, because of the new job and the new apartment, I really haven't found the time to get all the stuff posted up that I wanted to...but now, here she is, in her full colour beauty.

For some personal data, Rex is made up of over 3000 individual pieces, and over 400,000 polys. The textures take up a combined 1.6 gigs of storage space, with the largest being 2 unique textures for the knee section at 4000x4000 pixels in resolution. Well over 150 hours of work went into this model, which required a full 2 weeks simply to unwrap for texturing. The final renders took upwards of 45 minutes to render with full effects applied, and over 25 minutes per frame for the turntable animation, which took almost 175 hours to render (and I had to render it twice since the first time didn't turn out right). It was modeled in Maya 6.01, rendered with Mental Ray, and all the textures were created in Photoshop 7.0

Just for note: The background was not specifically created by me, but it was just a cool background I happened upon online that I slightly modified in photoshop for use as the background for Rex. Just wanted to be clear on that.

I really enjoyed working on this model. Originally designed by Yoji Shinkawa for the game Metal Gear Solid, I was drawn to the concept because of what a striking pose rex gave off. It's very unique, and even in it's neutral stance, it looks ready to pounce. A very powerful silhouette, and has a lot of really great anthropomorphic qualities to it. And in a time when a lot of mech designs seem to favour complexity, rather than functionality, Rex was really a refreshing design.

I was hoping to take this project further, even possibly fully animating it, but the limitations on my PC just make it too difficult to do so. It is barely able to open right now because of all the RAM it requires, and the PC can barely tumble the camera around her, because she's just too high poly. I am also slightly burned out from the project, having been working on her for over 5 months now, and I'm looking forward to moving on and starting a new project.

The Black and White version of Rex I posted a few months back seems to get a favourite nod from someone almost every day, so I can only hope that everyone here enjoys the fully textured version that much more.

For more pictures, movies and info on Rex (including a couple of turntable animations of the complete model), you can check out the thread I started over a the Threedy Forums here: [link]

Anyways, that's about it for this update. Hope everyone likes the model, and I'm looking forward to starting up work on a new project.

Wow, 14 years later and it still looks as if it was a genuine photography of a shelf model. Couldn't make the difference before reading the description. Amazing work!
