Artist's Comments

Hey everyone. Haven't posted anything up for quite some time, so I figured I'd toss up my current Work in Progress. Been quite busy at work (I'm writing for a 3D magazine right now....it's not much, but it's a start), so it's been very tough trying to find the time to get all this art stuff in. Anyways....

This is a model of Metal Gear Rex from the game Metal Gear Solid. I was looking to do some sort of tank or mech, and a lot of people are doing these mechs that for whatever reason have no body armor (inspired by the Matrix A.P.U)....so I wanted to go back to a more traditional style mech, and Rex dawned on me. Not only is Rex a great and difficult build, but her design is beautiful. Even in a neutral pose it actually looks like she's ready to pounce.

It's a hefty model though...weighing in at just over 400,000 polys. Computer has a tough time tumbling that...and come render time I'll definitely have some hard choices to make. But all in all I'm very happy with how she has turned out thus far. I've since completely unwrapped her and now I've started texturing. When that's done, I'm going to rig it up and I've got a few animation friends who have expressed great interest in animating her, so I'll leave it to them to make the machine come alive.

But I'll be sure to update this when the final texture is finished.

Wow, I love this! Great attention to detail, and it actually looks functional. The design is a nice deviation from the standard mecha stuff I see here, well done.

Not Good, just Saved.

Truly just an agnostic.

Gaming and Website Design are my thang!

Great amount of detail.

Good job. It's quite remarkable. Where did you learn how to do that style?

Incredible detail, looks great. 400k polys..wow... that musta taken hella long to make. After 150k polys i usually get bored with models and give up.. Good luck to ya finishing this, i bet it will turn out remarkable

 CONGRATS on your job!! Yeah, it has been a while, ne? Silly life, getting in the way of art! :giggle:

When I first loaded this, I was like 'HOLY CRAP is that a toy?!?! IT must be, look at all those parts and details!!' and then that was about the time I passed out because I realized it was a CG model. :D WOWOWOWOW this must have taken you a zillion years!!! I cannot wait to see more progress on it!

If your talking about the rendering style (the fact that everything is black and white) it's called a dirt render. You put a "dirt map" on every object and the computer calculates out a dirt map based on how many times light rays bounce off objects. The more detailed an area, the more light rays bounce and the darker it gets...it produces some really nice clean renders.

It's actually mostly used for layering. You'd do a normal render of your scene, then do a dirt map render of your scene, and then with photoshop (or combustion or some sort of compositing software) layer in the dirt map render over top of the normal colour...it really makes your work pop out.

Hey, thanks..yeah there is about 100 hours into the model already (well I'm about 1/3 of the way through texturing, so that's 100 hours to that point). I'm really quite happy with it, and the texturing is turning out great.

If you want to see the whole thing from start to finish, you can check out my WIP thread at the Theedy forums: [link];page=1&;pp=15

It has the latest updates.

But I guess you'll be hitting back to the artistic grind stone soon enough. I'm guessing you're already back in Res, now....good luck with next year. I hope to drop by when I can :)

I know how to do that, (fr shaders are unbelievable) but I was more wondering about all of the small details. All of those nooks and crannies in the mesh look really cool, but I can't quite figure out how to replicate them.
